Crazy 8's - the Greatest Band You've Never Heard
M. J. WALLACE | California | 12/23/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The Crazy 8's were one the greatest Ska/Funk/Jazz/Rock bands of all time. They were very popular on college campuses throughout most of the 1980's and the early 1990's, and many alternative music rankings consistantly featured the 8's high on their lists. Unfortunately, record companies have been busy signing up garbage like Britney Spears and 'N'Sync over the past 2 decades, thus truly great music like that produced by the Crazy 8's was often disregarded as not commercial enough and lost to most of the listening public. This album is pretty good - I'm giving it a 4 (maybe a 4.5), but an even better album is "Big Live Nut Pack", which gives listeners a sense of just how much damn fun it was to hear the 8's live. Put on this album at your next party, and your guests will have 10-20% more fun."
Highly Independent, Highly Funky
Bryan E. Cummings | Shoreline, WA USA | 06/09/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Based out of Portland, Oregon, the Crazy 8's were one of the most popular bands in the Northwest and on the West Coast college circuit in the 80's & early 90's. This CD, released in 1990, was their fifth independent release, following three studio albums and the tremendous two-disc live CD, "Big Live Nut Pack" (1988). "Doggapotamus World" represents the band's most accomplished studio work and received rave reviews at the time. Tracks range from funky, horn-driven jams like "Bootyopolis" to reggee-influenced political commentary on "Campaign Trail." The styles are vast, the attitude is loose, and the messages cover everything from AIDS and unemployed vets to eternal mysteries like "work or beer?". Ambitious, talented, and highly independent. Get it while you can."
