CD Reviews

File Under Different
S. Alix | NYC | 11/12/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The drummer and guitarist of the well known Project 86 have taken a break to record this record with their friend Joby in this little band they called Crash Rickshaw. Its not hardcore like Project 86. So its not one of those "if you love this then you'll like this" type of things. This and Project are like day and night. This is the most daring and original CD to come out this fall. The melodies are hard yet subtle. The lead singer whales out reminiscent of Jeremy of Sunny Day Real Estate. yet at the same time it has a daring grunge element like dare I say Nirvana. It has the sound of EMO but the lyrics are not EMO. The lyrics are very straight forward and the words hop and skip in a way that works with the music and finds pleasure in your ear drum. Its kinda hard to describe, but if you like experimental music then this is ur bag. If you like EMO but without the "my gf left me" lyrics then you'll love this. Its different but its good. Every track has its own style, the only sad thing is since two of the members are from Project then touring will be slim to none and we won't get a second record till Project is done with their 3rd CD and tour. But until then, enjoy this little piece of something different."

"crash rickshaw is a sparkling little gem of an album that i found in the bargain pile at a christian book store. i had heard a few good things about it, so i decided that i would check it out.
crash rickshaws rhythm section belongs to project 86, and i guess the guitarist/singer is their friend. thankfully, this band sounds absolutely nothing like project 86. this cd is everything that is fresh, new, fun, experimental, raw and emotional about rock. admittedly, this is more than a simple nod to fugazi, but no matter. its an absolute blast to listen to and experience. go check it out."
My Aggressions Find Inner Peace

"So if you're like me, you are always trying to find innovative, interesting and artist music, which has faith inspiration. As spirituality becomes more important in my personal life, and in society as a whole, I see no reason why the arts should not move in a similar direction.Crash Rickshaw brings us aggressive, edgy rock with a punk edge (but I definitely wouldn't call it strict punk.) The lyrical depth of the album provides an optimistic view on a dark, harsh world. Their music expresses the dichotomy of believing in a perfect God in such an imperfect place. It shows us a hard, dark exterior, with an interior of a strange yet unmistakable joy found in unpredictable heavy melody.Time Alone, Thank God I'm an Atheist, and Self-Defeating Mind are highlights for me. The rest of the album is strong with the possible exception of A.N., which might have been better left for a B-side. I highly recommend this CD, and odds are if you like other stuff on Tooth and Nail you will probably get really into this."
