CD Reviews

A worthwhile first single off the Future Songs album
05/01/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Being a long-time fan of the Cranes and having recently become a completist for bands which I've especially liked, I felt obligated to purchase their new single "Submarine." This 8-track CD consists of remix versions of "Submarine," "Don't Wake Me Up" and "Driving In The Sun." While there is no new material on this single (some people consider remix versions of songs new material but I don't...more like variations of already existing material), it is worth checking out.Unfortunately, the first 3 tracks are not too ear-catching and simply drag in a sluggish crawl. But from track 4 on the music improves a great deal, giving the original versions of these songs some very interesting and pleasing new dimensions. To me, the gem of this CD is track 4, the only remix of "Driving In The Sun." This version adds a nice twist to the song while maintaining the same beauty and tranquility as the album version. Track 6, one of the remixes of "Don't Wake Me Up," takes on a trance/ambient feel. Another track of interest is number 8, one of the remixes of "Submarine." One could say that this version has a techno/dance quality to it.What made me deduct one star from my rating is the reason I mentioned above: no new material. It would have been great if an unreleased song was included, perhaps a live version of a song, even a demo version would have been good. I certainly enjoyed (most of) the remix versions, and I think this CD single is a good investment for any Cranes fan. Just make sure you aren't expecting to hear anything that new."
