"Cormac McCarthy is an obscure New England folkie with only two CDs to his credit, but he is also one of the most fascinating and listenable musicians in my collection. I'm especially fond of this debut album. McCarthy, a former English major, is highly literate and gifted at storytelling. He presents evocative imagery and finely drawn characterization. "Waltz With the Captain's Daughter" is a short story compressed into one fascinating and beautiful song. But my favorite is the poignant and lyrical "When My Boat Is Built Again," a song with an odd power to bring me to tears.McCarthy has an exceptionally likable and resonant voice. His guitar work is good, although the excellent pedal steel accompaniment on "When My Boat Is Built Again" is not his. This is one of the most treasured albums in my collection. I don't know why he hasn't come out with a third album, but I'll be eternally grateful he gave us this one!"
Great lyric, great voice

"McCarthy's songwriting ability shines on this album. His ability to use images makes one "see" the song. Coupled with a fine vocal style, this is a must have CD.The title song is as excellent as any, but there are some here that should be noted. "Outside These Walls" is a song of optimism, sung in the voice of a prison inmate determined to correct his life."Cows" is a hilarious ditty that shows McCarthy's range and sense of humor. "Waltz With the Captain's Daughter" is a sad love song that reminds everyone of someone.McCarthy never leaves you flat. Fans of acoustic music and great lyric will love it!"
