Sleeping In soul
Michael Kerner | Brooklyn, New York U.S.A. | 03/28/2007

"With a decline in authentic soul sounds, there just really could've been a lot more to great music. There are very few artists though who have shown a great style that remains as strong as years ago. For a newcomer like Corrine Bailey Rae, she has a soft voice and a great style, and her third single still shows that well. Trouble Sleeping, the third single from her self-titled record shows a soulful uniqueness that hasn't been seen since Sade. I like this song because it is simple and brings out the feeling of her voice very well. Out of all the recent artists that've came out the past few years, I really like her, and I hope she keeps it up.

The dreamiest voice in the game right now.

"Trouble Sleeping - A great mid-tempo. Her dreamy, sensitive and emotionally-unwavering voice just floats effortlessly and there is no screaming or soaring anywhere on this particular track. It's a nice song that features simple organ keys, that repeat a lot, but don't necessarily get on your nerves. All in all just very fun and soft. Love the do, do, do-ah's at the end. So, so cute... 4.25/5

Till It Happens To You - Obviously the strongest track here. It's a slow ballad, that has Corinne feeling mixed about the situation she's in; the love she's in. Like me, she wants to get out in the open, in a silent rage over it, and would love it if her lover, for once didn't ask where she was going.

The kick is that she doesn't know where she's going. Just wants to get out of there and think about things!

She basically states that love isn't all it is in dreams. "It used to feel like Heaven, it used to feel like May.."

"I used to hear those violins playing our strings like a symphony.." "Now they've gone away.."

"We used to stay up all night, in the kitchen when our love was new.."

"You can only learn these things from experience" she says, confidently. "When you get older..."

"I just wish someone would've told me." she breathes, followed by a bit of soulful humming.

"Till It Happens To You." 5.25/5

Breathless - this track is another mid-tempo. Here she does belt a bit but it fits. Again, it's very dreamy, production-wise and vocally, like the album tends to be more than not. A great tune to have on your mp3 player, such as an iPod. :) 4.5/5

14/3 = 4.66 (repeating, then a 7.)

4.67 stars.

End Note: All of these songs are gold, but Till It Happens To You and Call Me When You Get This are neck and neck with being her best songs ever. I like the former because it's slower, and laid-back and true, yet CMWYGT is much more upbeat; poppier, dreamier and has this irresistible vocal work going for it.

Guess if I HAVE to choose, Call Me When You Get This is the keeper. :)

For all of those who DON'T KNOW, get IN THE KNOW about Corinne! Her voice is soothing, and something else, I tell ya!!! "
