CD Reviews

Italy's finest
fabio-italy | milan, italy | 02/17/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Most of the foreign audiences relate Italian Female Pop to reigning diva Laura Pausini.
Giorgia, on the other side, is considered in Italy at the same level...maybe less easy in terms of pop access, but definitely more soulful and masterful when it comes to vocal matters.
So far she has not enjoyed a planetary success as Laura's although they started out roughly at the same time, but she is on the right way.
This collection pulls together most of her hits.
E POI is Giorgia's signature song along with a string of other friendly-radio hits, from the country-tinged sound of GIRASOLE and TRADIREFARE to the soul-influenced E C'E' ANCORA MARE.
Ballads are Giorgia's forte: DIMMI DOVE SEI, STRANO IL MIO DESTINO e DI SOLE E D'AZZURRO will blow you away.
There are some notable missing tunes, the splendid duet with Andrea Bocelli (which fortunately found a home on the guy's own greatest hits package...so maybe some of you may have already had the privilege to hear her voice), the moving 1995 ballad RIGUARDA NOI and the bouncy, summertime 1997 anthem IN VACANZA CON ME. And many more...
For the rest, you will encounter a velvety voice that many times has been compared to Whitney Houston's by most critics.
Apparently, if not by foreign audiences, Giorgia is loved by people in the industry abroad.
She duetted with Bryan Adams, Boyzone's former vocalist Ronan Keating (great duet on WE'VE GOT TONITE remake), featured in live appearances (can't get out of my head her rendition along with Michael MacDonald of ON MY OWN when he supported Cher's 1999 BELIEVE tour here in Milan).
Diane Warren wrote the music to Giorgia's lyrics on PARLAMI D'AMORE, and living legend Herbie Hancock played piano on such a dark track as IL MARE SCONOSCIUTO.
Two new tracks highlight this package: VIVI DAVVERO is a R'n'B tune that brings out the Aretha Franklin fan deep in Giorgia.
MARZO is one of the most emotional tune i ever heard, dedicated to the former boyfriend recently lost to a motorbike accident.
It is grand, sampling Eurythmics' lines from THE MIRACLE OF LOVE, yet living a life of its own.
Giorgia really deserves to break through all over the world, she's got the looks and the vocals skills needed.
She only needs a BIG production to make it...mr. David Foster and Walter Afanasieff, are you reading this???
Start on the right track and get a taste of this!"
The "next" Mina
Joseph R. Vernuccio | New Haven, CT USA | 07/29/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Giorgia, crowned the next Mina in Italy has wonderful range and her choice of music has been impeccable. Her greatest hits is a mish-mash from her prior successful CDs...including most of her best work. There are ommissions...like her version of Mina's "Il cielo in una stanza"...and a few others, but overall this is one bang up CD. The 3 new tracks are a nice addition, especially "Marzo' which I understand is a dedication to her late singer/boy friend killed in a motorcycle crash in March 2002. This CD is a "must" for fans of contemporary Italian music."
Lovely voice, tiresome style

(3 out of 5 stars)

"The great joy I have in listening to Italian artists like Laura Pausini and Andrea Bocelli, is that they, in their best work, impart something of an Italian artistic sensibility in their music - a quality that I can not easily find in the crowded American music scene. With Giorgia, who undoubtabley has a tremendous voice, one could hardly distinguish her music from anything on American radio if her lyrics would have been written in English. In this sense, the comparison with Whitney Houston is apt. Yet with Whitney, she is authentic to herself, singing in a style that comes from a family steeped in gospel, rhythym and blues, and hip-hop. For an Italian to slavishly imitate an American way of singing that is currently in vogue, while offering little to distinguish it from the hords of other singers/songs in this particular style, is a waste of a great voice for the audience. If I wanted an R and B singer, I have only to look to my backyard, the USA, to find it, since its birthplace has the best in the world. How about something a little more original, that comes from your soul, Giorgia? What you often present is just the mundane repetition and imitation of the "soul" style (which everybody and their brother is doing these days) that a record company pre-packages on your behalf in order to gain record sales from a non-discriminating public."
