"CONJUNTO PROGRESO"- Master Sessions: Descarga & Son
L. Dequesada | JAMAICA,, NY United States | 05/16/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is Johnny Aguilo's "Conjunto Progreso" latest CD album hit. This ensemble is vibrant with hot rhythm and vocals with a carefully selected program of traditional Cuban music hits, masterfully interpreted by this brilliant conjunto. This album is dedicated to the memory Cuban trumpet legend Rolando "Ruso"Aguilo, who played in Cuba and the U.S. with prominent bands, including his own Descarga Ensemble which he recorded in Cuba. Rolando passed away last year and I can't think of a better tribute to his memory than this new album. Its contents speaks for its timely production: "Descarga Progreso",the famous old time guajira son, "El Carretero", "Maracaibo Oriental", the all time Ignacio Piñeiro composed favorite "Suavecito", the jazz traditional favorite "Caravan", Compay Segundo's blockbuster hit "Chan Chan", the classic hit, "Me Voy Pa'Sibanicu", "Ay Candela" of "Buenavista Social Club" fame and the descarga "El Chino y su Abaniquito" where previously recorded musical segments of the late Rolando Aguilo, playing his trumpet can be heard.

I highly recommend this album to all of those who appreciate and enjoy Afro-Cuban music. A must have."

"Great sounds and just plain good Cuban music from truly amazing musicians.

My favorite track (and my newest motto for life) is SUAVECITO. What a great tune! This is a must buy for people who enjoy some good Cuban music and love to dance."
Great Music from Miami

"This recording is a great example of the superb talent that is lying latent in Miami. What we hear is music that respects and preserves tradition while at the same time transcending and exploring new possibilities.

The ingenious use of tres and electric guitar by Jose Elias as well as Toto Omana Baptiste on electric guitar on Me Voy Pa Sibanicu are examples of this. At the same time Lazaro Alfonso on congas on Caravan gives us a chance to enjoy the chops of one of Cuba's best on percussion.

If you love son and want to listen to some of it's best interpreters, give it a listen.
