CD Reviews

This is the Pugliese sound with better sound quality.
Mark Hammond | Chambersburg, PA USA | 09/29/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Color Tango is, without any doubt, the best contemporary orchestra playing Argentine Tango today. If you like the sound of the Osvaldo Pugliese orchestra, this is it. They have the spirit and the inheritance of the Pugliese. This is the orchestra that has veterans of the Pugliese orchestra, including Roberto Alvarez (principal bandoneonist and arranger), Fernando Rodriguez (violin), and Amilcar Toloso (contra bass). This is the music for dancing, a milonguero's delight. These are the old favorites, including pieces by Canaro, Pugliese, Gobbi, and Piana. There are two more modern pieces by Roberto Alvarez and Emilio Balcarce, which are just delightful. This is the disk that was chosen as best disk of the year (1995) by the Asociacion de Cronistas de Espectaculos. You will find it to be both romantic and expressive.Although Color Tango is composed of just seven pieces, it sounds like a much larger orchestra. If you like Pugliese's recordings from the 1960's, you will love Color Tango. I like this orchestra so much that I have seen them in concert three times and own their complete discography. If you enjoyed "Con Estilo ... Para Bailar, Vol. 1 and 2", you will be delighted with this disk. I will also put in my recommendation for a new release, "Tango a Pugliese," which will soon become available in the United States."
