Synopsis

Amazon.com
Collin Raye built the best of his career with songs of social reality--the recovering alcoholic of "Little Rock," the couple separated by death in "Love, Me," the plea for tolerance in "Not That Different." In focusing on stories of familial love and struggle, the former Reno lounge singer (billed then as "Bubba Wray") has carved out a sentimental, yet viable niche for himself in commercial country. However, while he insists his latest album is about perseverance, it largely bypasses issues for bland love songs--set to overblown pop arrangements--that mostly fail to hit the mark. "What I Need," a meaty ballad about prayers both answered and ignored, gives the album its one true moment, and "Ain't Nobody Gonna Take That from Me" shines in its celebration of an everyday hero. But everyday is synonymous with average, a word that sums up the bulk of this easy-to-ignore offering. --Alanna Nash

CD Reviews

Collin Raye "Can't Back Down"

(5 out of 5 stars)

"The song "Ain't Nobody Gonna Take That" is especially meaningful. I've seen the video and it brings back memories of attending baseball games with my brother. The last part, with his son, brought goose bumps, it is so moving. Collin has a very strong voice and injects so much meaning in to all of his songs. This should be a best seller. I have not been a "country fan" and never bought any "country" CD's. After seening the video and hearing some of the other songs from this CD I will certainly buy this."

"This is my favorite Collin Raye CD. It showcases his strong tenor voice, proving he is the best Nashville has to offer. His choice of songs is always mixed and not strictly a country sound. Every song is a hit. You will not be disappointed if you add this CD to your collection."
