CD Reviews

Cluster's Sonic Rebirth
D. Henson | Portland, OR | 10/19/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Having owned all of these recordings (except "Strange Music" which I never could find) this box is an utter revelation. Captain Trips is an amazing label from Japan who do top-notch work. The packages are faithul to the original vinyl releases down to the sky labels. The sound quality is what is beyond exception. I havd heard these recordings hundreds of times and have owned them in many different forms, (vinyl, Gyroscope re-issues, japanese jewel-case editions from the early ninties, and the recent re-issues on Water out of San Francisco), but this is the first time they have been truly remastered and it shows. Cluster ('71) shimmers in waves that sound like you are in space. Sowiesoso has the beginning 1:00 restored to it's intro and all the superflous hiss removed from the recording. Grosses Wasser is clean and vibrating. Curiosum is gritty, but defined. It's closing track, Ufer, no longer lost in a sea of hiss revealing little plaintive melodies that ebb and flow just as it's title (Shore/The Shore) suggests. Having never heard Strange Music was an added treat (and aptly titled). Double Cut oozes in all of it's flanged-out glory. If you know this music or want to experience it the way it was truly meant to be heard, I highly recommend this set. A second box will be released in Novenber containing their two collaborations with Brian Eno as well as three other titles."
