Synopsis

Album Description
Berlin 2007 was a monumental performance for Cluster, as it marked the first time that they had performed live in Berlin since their 1969 twelve-hour concert in the Europacenter's Galerie Hammer. The performance was a massive success, and a soldout crowd cheered loudly for Cluster to return to the stage. Fortunately, the concert was preserved for posterity and is proudly presented here on Important Records. Cluster was formed around 1971 when Roedelius and Moebius left Conrad Schnitzler's group Kluster. Along with Kluster, the group has had a tremendous influence on the development of contemporary electronic music. Julian Cope has placed three

CD Reviews

An unexpected comeback!

"Remarkable performance by 2 electronic music pioneers.

The gig is build on elements of pure ambient drones & noises, echoes of kraut, classic berlin school sequences + even some melodic, uplifting lines that blend together in perfect harmony (or 'harmonia' if u like:). I've seen Roedelius and Moebius live in Poznan 2008, but Berlin '07 performance beats everything else. A must!!!"
The Return of CLUSTER!!!

"After not performing together for over a decade, the legendary German electronic duo Cluster reunited for a momentous live performance in Berlin on September 14th 2007 (their first performance in that city since their formation in 1969). The concert was a raging success and fortunately was recorded for CD release.

The "Berlin 2007" CD features the entire 66-minute two-part performance and definitely shows that Cluster has plenty of fresh new ideas up their sleeves. In typical Cluster fashion, the music is full of variety ranging from ambient to cinematic to unsettling experimental weirdness. There are even a few 'commercial' moments which are heard in the opening section of the second part with Kraftwerk-style beats and throbbing basslines.

There are many other highlights heard throughout the concert such as a powerful suspenseful section heard towards the end of the first part which to my ears sounds similar to Tangerine Dream's film music. There's also a beautiful moment which occurs roughly 20-minutes into the second part that has some Brian Eno similarities to it.

Indeed, this is a CD that needs to listened to from beginning to end in order to be fully understood. There are several moments throughout the disc that have so much happening in them, it's worth repeated listenings.

After so many years of not performing together, it's great to see Cluster back in action. Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius have definitely proven that working together is just like riding a bicycle - once they're together making music in the same room, it's like they never went away. Here's hoping that their 2008 tour will yield more great music as well as another live CD. That would be awesome.

If you're a Cluster fan or a fan of each members' solo works, "Berlin 2007" is definitely a must. Here begins a new chapter for Moebius and Roedelius - apropos Cluster!!!"
