Unexpected byrd

"Charlie Byrd was most well known for his recordings of Bossa Nova in the 60s, especially his Jazz Samba album with Stan Getz. This recording shows his classical training. He studied for a time with Andres Segovia, and I have always felt that that background informed and enriched his playing of jazz. My favorite cut on this album is Alonso Mudarra's "fantasia that imitates the harp-playing of Ludovico", which has peculiar polyrythms and polyharmonies -- so peculiar that Mudarra wrote in the score " from here to the end there are notes that look wrong but if you play htem well they will sound right!Charlie plays them well."
