Synopsis

Product Description
Bassoon Unbounded celebrates the diverse possibilities for music making in the new millennium by featuring multiple styles and genres, a range of emotive and technical dexterities, and incorporating varied compositional techniques and technologies. The album showcases the omnivorous tastes of American composers, performers and audiences in the twenty-first century. Many of its pieces invite audiences to rehear America's rich musical past by infusing contemporary musical ideas and approaches with pivotal sounds from the twentieth-century. These include cowboy songs from the southwest, canonic women jazz singers, modernist and twelve-tone compositional techniques and electronic experimentation. Other featured works draw inspiration from peripheral artistic media, such as American bronze sculpture and Hollywood blockbuster films. In this way Bassoon Unbounded offers listeners a wide sonic palate that ranges from vernacular to art, rural to urban, and entertaining to cerebral. Bassoonist Christin Schillinger specializes in the accessibility of the avant-garde, aiming to broaden the audience for both new music and music for bassoon. Schillinger works closely with living composers who remark on her natural interpretations and fine musical choices. To facilitate the demands of 21st-century compositions, Schillinger takes great care to research and ensure reed-making consistency. Her 2016 book, Bassoon Reed Making (Indiana University Press) details current and historic trends in this field. Schillinger's groundbreaking research extends to guest lectures and residencies throughout the United States and Europe. An active participant in the International Double Reed Society, she has published numerous articles and regularly appears at conferences as a performer and lecturer. In addition, she co-hosted the 2012 Annual Conference and inaugural IDRS Teen Camp. Schillinger is on faculty at Ithaca College in New York where she performs frequently with New Music and traditional orchestral ensembles. Previously, she held positions with Miami University, University of Nevada, and with several orchestras throughout the west. Jed Moss is an in-demand collaborative and concert pianist. Based in the Salt Lake City region, he is the resident pianist for Utah's elite Ballet West, Utah Chamber Music Society Series and Contemporary Music Consortium. Moss collaborates as a symphonic pianist, appearing at festivals across the west including Teton, Bear Lake, and Deer Valley. As a collaborative chamber musician, Moss appears with musicians from the nation s top orchestras and universities. Moss is a frequent artist within the double reed genre. In addition to his active collaboration with Christin Schillinger, he is a member of the Utah-based double reed ensemble, Sundance Trio. He has also twice been a resident pianist for the International Double Reed Society Annual Conference. Moss has worked as a studio musician since 1992, recording motion picture soundtracks at L.A. East studios in Salt Lake City. He has played on several Hallmark Hall of Fame made-for-TV movies as well as Merchant Ivory films, and is the former keyboardist for the rock band, Air Supply. Moss has collaborated with numerous instrumentalists and vocalists, frequently premiering newly commissioned works, and is noted for his great flexibility as a performer.
