CD Reviews

Quelle surprise!

"I was dying to hear this CD after it swept the board and won all the hot awards at the Swedish music industry show earlier this year. Then I heard the gorgeous highlight single, "Make it right" -with seductive, soulful vocals from Demetreus, on the radio and ordered it straight away. "Make it right" is a sublime and infectious piano-led, house anthem that will stay in your head for days -a delicious late 80's sounding dance track that should propel this fantastic CD into the hearts and minds of the rest of the world. Falk has created a masterpiece -a classic dance album that, like "Ray of light" or the Massive Attack sets, is so well produced, so sophisticated and cool, so infectious that it stands high above any other release this summer. Every single track is star quality. Falk keeps it strictly low-key, letting his beautiful rhythmic instrumentation and subtle dance beats wrap around the different vocals and allowing the various singers to shine through. If I have to choose, other standout tracks would include the impressive, moody, opening track, "Remember" -co-written and sung by a mature but still very youthful Robyn (with gorgeous Massive Attack instrumentation and deep piano bass lines) and the delicious 2nd track, "Leave me" -sung by club singer Yavahn (with a harp playing gently over sublime house beats). There is no way you can not surrender to the intense powerhouse vocals of Jevetta Steele on the tracks slower but nonetheless gorgeous "Calling you". Then Neneh Cherry lends her own tough individual style to the upbeat club groove "Moody" backed by a Saxophone and sparkling piano. And melt under the smooth vocals from soul star Stephen Simmonds on the sexy, drum and bass journey "Inside your love". As good as ALL the vocalists are, it is impossible to ignore the musical talent of Christian Falk himself -spotlighted on the sets closing title track. If you appreciate good well produced dance-oriented CDs then take my advice and don't hesitate to get this; and if you're already a fan then I suggest searching out the new CD from New Zealand dance act Strawpeople (a dance project using star New Zealand vocalists -like Bic Runga on a cool version of the Cars classic "Drive"), the new critically-lauded debut from rising UK musician MJ Cole -"Sincere" (featuring the sophisticated vocals of Elizabeth Troy), and even the fantastic CDs from UK acts Solar Twins and Olive -"Trickle" (brought out to the world by trend-setting-queen Madonna and her Maverick crew). But as for "Quel Bordel">> GET READY for a superior, essential listening experience."
Stellar debut for Swedish musician

"Employing a number of singers and incorporating catchy dance rhythms, Christian Falk scores big with his debut album "Quel Bordel." Featuring guest appearances by Robyn and Demetrius, there is not a single dud on the CD. The album's highlight, however, is the ballad "Calling You," originally the theme to "Bagdad Cafe" and sung by the song's original vocalist, Jevetta Steele. The tune has been covered many times over since its inclusion in that 1989 film (most notably by jazz artists, including Holly Cole and Stanley Turrentine), but the version here could easily be the best."
Some backround info and suggestions

"Thought some of you non-Swedes out there my be interested to know that Christian Falk was a member of the group Imperiet in the late 80's. This group was fronted by the granddaddy of Swedish punk, Joakim Thåstöm, previously in Ebba Grön and afterwards in Peace, Love and Pitbulls and lately releasing under his own name.

Nevertheless, you might want to check out Imperiet ("the Empire"). They had kind of a synth and guitar based sound with heavy bass playing from Christan Falk. It's not all that similar to this cd, but... My suggestion: get a hold of some of their songs in electronic format (for example "C.C.Cowboys" or "Var e vargen") through the legal/illegal mode of your choice. And if you think it sounds good and it seems kind of cool to own a cd with Swedish lyrics (which are mainly anti-greed and/or anti-US foreign policy) [...]

And oh, yes... the review: Yeah, it's a good cd and all that. Perhaps a little bit too slick for most of my moods though. :-)"
