CD Reviews

Obscure but darn classy

"Cool beach-punk from the early '80s LA scene. The Cheifs have been bootlegged a bunch of times on "Killed By Death" and "Bloodstains" type records, since their sole EP -- "Blues," included in its entirety here, along with compilation tracks and a half-dozen or so unreleased songs -- went out of print years ago. And it's a ripper!

The Cheifs have a melodic, mid-tempo punk/hardcore attack with great fuzzy guitar, rubbery bass and snarling vocals. Think of it as a cross between early Black Flag ("Nervous Breakdown") and Adolescents because of the real melodic quality to the music. It's super-catchy -- especially tracks like "Holly-West Crisis," "The Lonelies" and "Blues" -- but never wimpy or watered-down. They would have been a perfect addition to the Posh Boy Records roster.

The recording quality is pretty raw, but that's to be expected, and I think it adds to the personality of the band. At only 13 songs, it's a pretty short CD, but there's also a bunch of bonus CD-Rom stuff like a live video and some flyer reproductions (looks like the Cheifs got to play with some killer bands, like Black Flag, Germs, Fear, X, Social Distortion, TSOL... all the SoCal greats).

Truly, this is a lost gem. I only wish the band got into the studio to record a few more songs, because their snotty, simple and catchy tunage would have made for a killer LP. Oh well, at least we've got this CD, eh?"
Great Early 80's So-Cal

"The song "Blues" is worth the asking price alone if you do not already own it on Killed By Death Volume 2. If you do or don't I would recommend this album to anyone I know. With songs like "Hollwest Crisis" and "No Justice" they blend anger and attitude together better than any band today can. Nobody could get the great guitar sound of the early 80's then or now that they did."
