CD Reviews

Great flamenco music
mysterio | Louisville, KY USA | 12/04/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Simply put, every fan of flamenco music should have a copy of "Complices." For that matter, every fan of music should have a copy. The music on this CD is simultaneously complex and flavorful, the kind of stuff that the listener can enjoy even if one doesn't fully understand it. Furthermore, Chicuelo thankfully doesn't drift into any "jazz fusion" or "easy listening" territory; this is real flamenco. All of the tracks are of high quality, but my favorites are tracks 1, 4, 5, and 6. "Cambalache" is a long, calculated buleria that includes the violin, palmas, jaleos, a small choir, and the voice of Duquende-consequently, it has an epic feel. "Vivencias" is a beautiful, dreamy taranta. "Dulce Sal" is my all-time favorite alegria; it's a masterpiece, as far as I am concerned. Lastly, "Perigalla" is an unbelievably passionate buleria, yet very complex and melodic. (The buleria is my favorite palo and this is one of the best I've heard.) My least favorite track would have to be the rumba "BCN" because it's really more jazz than flamenco, but it's still good. This is possibly the best CD in my collection, and my collection includes the works of Paco de Lucia, Gerardo Nunez, Tomatito, and Vicente Amigo. The only other CD that rivals this one is "Decision" by Pedro Sierra, which I also highly recommend."
