CD Reviews

A great legend in afro-cuban jazz
11/07/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In this big band format, Chico O'Farrill brings to his fans more beatiful tracks. "Guagasi" is the base of two anthology themes: "Te Quiero", is a good motive to the brightness solo of Gato Barbieri's tenor sax; and, the beatiful balad "Sin tu Amor" with the sensual voice of Vivian Ara. In my opinion, the top moment in this Chico's CD to be enough in the "Trumpet Fantasy" suite, dedicated to Wynton Marsalis, one of the more brillant music friends of that legendary director and composer in afro-cuban jazz music."

Not the tribute Chico deserves

"This disc is patently inferior to Chico's earlier recordings -- be sure to check the Verve anthology, "Cuban Blues," for Chico and his own bands at their best. "The Original Mambo Kings" is another terrific starting point -- several of the most important pieces that he composed for Machito's Afro-Cubans can be found there, including "The Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite" and the famous Cubop standard, "Gone City.""
