Synopsis

Product Description
One of the few artists to emerge from The Gong Show and still remain credible, Cheryl Lynn first hit in 1979 with her debut single Got To Be Real. Selling over a million copies, it proved the perfect springboard for this, her debut album. Produced by David and Marty Paich, the album also includes the Top 20 hit Star Love and the dance success You Saved My Day. Long out of print, this album has sold over 500,000 copies. The new expanded edition features the 7'' hit version of Got To Be Real with its alternate vocals, along with the 12'' version of You Saved My Day which was not commercially released at the time. 16 page full color booklet draws on new interviews from Cheryl Lynn, David Paich and James Gadson.

CD Reviews

Fabulous music, and words too!

"I'm a huge Cheryl Lynn fan. Have been for years. And I do own a copy of the original CBS Records CD reissue of her celebrated debut album. But this new reissue is far superior. Not only does it sound better than the original CD pressing, but those liner notes are a treasure. They include a recent interview with Cheryl Lynn as she recounts her audition for The Gong Show, winning the competition, signing with Columbia Records and recording this magical disc. Seriously, the liner notes alone are worth the price of the CD, particularly for a diehard fan. Thank you Reel Music for doing what Sony should have done eons ago."
*Extraordinary* Debut Album...*Remastered*!

"It's about time Cheryl Lynn's self-titled debut album, CHERYL LYNN, got the remastered treatment! Although I would have loved it if it was a 32-bit re-master, this version is nothing to sneeze at.

The CD sounds full bodied and clear, and Lynn's voice is nice and bright.

Released in 1978 after Lynn was spotted on TV's "The Gong Show," CHERYL LYNN sounds as good today as I'm sure it did back then.

It contains the number 1 single "To Be Real," which is one of the songs that exemplify the decadent disco 70s, and "Star Love," another disco anthem that didn't chart as high but shows off the power and range of Lynn's voice. After she sings "why don't you," repeating the words to delirium on the song "Star Love," you hear her climb the scale higher and higher on a scat "zooo-wow" until she hits that zenith, blowing out the stratosphere, and then cascading back down...It will leave you breathless and give you chills. Those two songs are worth the price of this album alone.

But there isn't a weak track on this CD. And being that this album is over 30-years old, the tracks don't sound dated at all. Lynn is just as good singing the slower ballads like "Come In From The Rain," "You're The One," and "Daybreak (Storybook Children)," as she is handling the funkier up-tempo songs like "All My Lovin'," "You Saved My Day," "Give My Love To You" and "Nothing You Say."

There are two bonus tracks "Got To Be Real" (7-inch Version) and "You Saved My Day" (12-inch version).

Also included is a booklet with some pictures and liner notes by A. Scott Galloway, who interviews Lynn for this re-release, and includes biography and song information.

Sadly, Lynn has never been able to top the commercial success of this album or the hit single "To Be Real." But according to the liner notes, Lynn has been working on a new album/CD for the past decade...so you never know!"
Great remaster of classic album

"Disco was a musical period that certainly got a bad rap. There was much music produced that only had the infamous disco beat with voices manipulated electronically for the songs. The beat was the key. But there were some great talents to emerge during this period and Cheryl Lynn was certainly one of them. This awesome remaster of her debut album is superb. At the time she had two of the biggest disco hits ever but this set of songs showed the pure talent and versatility she possessed. GOT TO BE REAL was and is still a disco classic. Her performance is great but so is the song and she could have been a one hit wonder. Then she released STAR LOVE which starts slow and builds to a glorious display of her multi-octave range that seemed to reach levels only dogs could hear. This song was again disco magic where her personality managed to shine.

But the rest of the album - oh, what magic. A big song at the time was COME IN FROM THE RAIN and everyone seemed to be covering it. Cheryl does here and she totally makes it her own with a strong emotional r&b vibe. She also wrote many of the tracks here. ALL MY LOVIN and NOTHING YOU SAY were both rockin gospel tinged tracks. And ballads here are supreme. YOU'RE THE ONE and DAYBREAK are pure magic and you will be mezmerized by her emotional performance. This album showed that Cheryl Lynn was not just a disco queen. She had a voice that possessed an angelic purity that could display such emotion and range whether singing lilting ballad notes or using her multi-octaves to skit skat all over. Now, 32 years after the 1978 release people think of Cheryl Lynn and always think of GOT TO BE REAL and STAR LOVE but with this release we see had she chosen she certainly could have had a lengthy career as a true r@b singer. She released many following albums. The next two were pretty good but then they became pretty much disco generic.

This album is remastered perfectly and a must for Cheryl Lynn fans and also fans of quality music. This is a release from a disco diva who shows her true talent rose far beyond the mere disco scene. Angelic, masterful and highly recommended. If only she would release a new cd now. We can dream."
