Great Overview of a Great Musician

"Charlie Shavers is a "Musician's Musician"; one of those players who is not well known to the public, but has the admiration and respect of most who've heard him. The cuts picked for this CD were chosen by many people, so different aspects of Mr. Shavers' playing are represented...and there are many aspects! A trumpet player who can sound lyrical AND has a double-high range along with facility to play bebop (although he's associated with the swing era) has my vote. Truly a joy to hear: a great jazz player who can play his instrument. Plus, there are many other 'greats' on this cd...Teddy Wilson, Coleman Hawkins, Russel Procope, Benny Carter, etc. This cd got me through a cruise ship contract, and it still gives me kick!!"
