CD Reviews

Widor - Excellent!
Art Griggs | Sausalito, CA United States | 03/15/2008

"I was impressed with this recording of these two organ symphonies. The abiance of the cathedral is striking. Listening intently or just playing softly in the background, I have found this CD to to be a pleasant break from the jazz and rock music normally heard on my system."
Worth considering at the price, but there are some major cav

"Christian von Blohn seems intent on giving us relatively no-fuss, straightforward readings of two of Widor's most popular organ symphonies - which is surely a good thing. Unfortunately his playing is marred by what sounds like rhythmic insecurity; the lack of a steady pulse in the music in fact makes it sound wearisome and undermines much of its effect - the playing sounds a little bit as if Blohn were playing after a metronome, but were lingering just a little bit too much at the beginning of every bar so that he constantly has to rush a little to catch up. Now, I don't want to exaggerate the problem - it doesn't completely undermine what are, apart from that, sensitive and considered performances, but it is a detraction nonetheless especially in the fifth symphony. The instrument he is using is fair enough but unremarkable; as for the sound quality, it sounds remarkably clear and good - but you soon discover that clarity has been obtained by suppressing the bass line, which is definitely not a good thing. Again, though, I don't want to sound too harsh - I did derive some enjoyment from these performances, and I guess the disc as a whole is worth considering at the price. But the caveats are undeniable."

"The performace(s) and audio reproduction quality of this CD were incomparable. Better yet, Vol. 3 of this little series offers a couple more purchases to savor.
