Continuing in the same lysergic-pop vein as their joyously experimental Of Cabbages & Kings, Chad Stuart & Jeremy Clyde let everything fly on The Ark, their wide-eyed Columbia finale. It's a hand-wrought gem studded with glittering acid-pop originals like "Painted Dayglow Smile" and "The Emancipation of Mr. X," from an album that was fitting testimonial to the radio friendly duo who changed from moptop minstrels to dazzling musical sculptors, right before our eyes.

Out with a bang, not a whimper

"Even though I thought C&J's first array into psychedelia, 1967's "Of Cabbages and Kings" was quite interesting, I found this one to be the best out of all the albums the duo has recorded during their career. So, as soon as I first popped the Sundazed reissue of this classic-their last album for Columbia-in my CD player, I found myself becoming highly addicted to the music on this disc. I'm not kidding. And it's like the liner notes described, they went "out with a bang, not a whimper". I'd definitely add this one to my list of all time favorite albums of the 60's, along with the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper", Love's "Forever Changes", the Byrds' "The Notorious Byrd Brothers", and other great records I enjoy from that period.

A Pop-Sike Masterpiece

"I'm constantly amazed how many 60's artists dabbled in the type of pyschedelia attributed to The Beatles' overrated "Sgt. Pepper" [which frankly was an appropriation of "Pet Sounds"] and went one better: from The Pretty Things' "SF Sorrow" to The Moon's "Without Earth" to this, a delightful pop-sike confection from Chad & Jeremy, probably best known [unfortunately for them] for the easy-listening ditty "A Summer Song. Not that it's an abysmal tune - it's quite charming in its own way, but this album, the sequel to the experimental, acid-tinged "Of Cabbages and Kings" is light years beyond their innocuous origins, and a damn fine piece of music, easily on par with "Pet Sounds" [and I don't make that comparison lightly.] Tracks like "Imagination" "Painted Dayglow Smile" and my personal fave, "Sunstroke" are as good as 60's psychedelic rock gets. The re-issue on Sundazed lovingly adds alternative versions of "Pipe Dream" and "Transatlantic Trauma" and two non-lp tracks equally interesting. A feast for the ears, "The Ark" is an unsung piece of 60's pop history."
