CD Reviews

A teriffic early music compilation.
Aaron J. Marx | Stevens Point, WI United States | 12/10/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Reinhard Goebel and his orchestra seem to have made it their mission to expose underappreciated early music to modern audiences. This album is an excellent example. The chaconne was, I believe, one of the most expressive genres of early music. Goebel and company make a strong case for all these pieces. Especially notable, I think, are those by Lully, Corelli and Muffat. This CD is a sure-fire carrier of pleasure. I highly recommend it."
The best CD I've heard this year
Aaron J. Marx | 10/13/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"While driving in my car and listening to Public Radio, I heard a selection from this CD and was so overcome by its beauty that I drove straight over to a music store and ordered it. Listen to track number 8, Sonata Ciacona in B flat major by Pezel. It's like listening to God. All the pieces, however, weave around and through you with their unique, relentless surge."
Great music to listen to while hand-cutting dovetails
A. Alexakis | 04/10/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I originally ordered this from BMG because I like early 18th century music. As a builder of reproduction furntiture from this period, I enjoy listening to appropriate music. This particular CD, "Chaconne", is the best I've found yet to cut fine joints, like half-blind dovetails in drawers. It is inspirational, putting one in a very creative mood. I highly recommend this."
