CD Reviews

Another great disc

"From the very first time I heard two of their songs on a tape a friend sent me, I have been a huge Ceili Rain fan. I love their album "Say KAY-lee." The highest compliment I can pay to their newest album, "Erasers On Pencils," is to say that I play it almost as much as KAY-lee. This is another great disc.I have decided that three things I really like about Ceili Rain are: their ability to cut loose ("Jigorous," "The Fighting Chair," "Erasers On Pencils"), an equally great capability to take it slow when the subject bears a little more reflection ("Thanks" is the track that really fits this category here), and finally, their great sense of humor. Above all these other reasons, the most obvious thing I like about them is that they don't write bad songs. It is so hard to single out just a few tracks here to call my favorites. They are all great. If pressed I'd have to say that "The Fighting Chair" is probably my favorite. It is a song with a great double meaning. It's about a guy getting called off the shore to fish the deep waters in a schooner with some "geezer." It resonates with me a lot since I've been called (also by someone who's been around for awhile) to be a fisher of men. I love the verse that says:"It felt scary, kinda crazy, like things usually feel to me. But it got me thinking-I'm standin' on the shoreline everytime there's somewhere to be. So I jumped up on his schooner, he strapped me in, put the pole in my hand. He said 'Twilight is gonna get your head right, you're gonna feel clean, you're gonna make a stand.'"I love Ceili Rain because they make that stand in all their wonderful songs. Some other highlights of "Erasers On Pencils" are the title track (a great showcase of that sense of humor), "Jigorous" (one of those songs they cut loose on), and "Junkyard" (another one of those great slow songs).Get this disc. This is great stuff."
Music about stuff people really care about

"It seems most modern groups try to find relevance in society's underbelly and sure enough there is plenty to be found there, but not everything. Ceili Rain sings songs on topics that are fundamental to people's lives. Outside of Country Western, I know of no artists that can make us joyful over the aging process as these people do in Jigorous. Pop or hard Rock just would not have the courage. Artist like Yeats and Wilde would have thought our Pop and Rock genres somewhat limited. But all this philosophy aside, Ceili Rain's Music is just plain fun. They are great musicians that play great Irish influenced music. They make it seem natural to sit down enjoy a good pint or two or three and listen to songs about love, death, family and GodSlán agus beannacht."

"The newest CD, Erasers on Pencils, by the Celtic rock group Ceili Rain is a keeper. Just one listen of the haunting song Junkyard is worth the price of the CD. The songs have lots of energy and beg for another listen."
