The Cars- an American mainstay!
12/12/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"It is great to see these albums out an in mass availibilty! One only has to reflect back to 1979 to know how much impact the Cars made on on American music! The debut album : the Cars, had 5 songs that were in comtinual rotation on the radio stations.Even in Indiana you could always turn on the radio and hear catchy Cars tunes!! The second album Candy-O ,did not have as many radio hits ,but it I feel thier best rock/ guitar driven album! It was a 50/50 balance of guitar and synthesizers.Harsh, quirky, original! Just one more notch in the "Cars have thier own sound not to be duplicated" belt! An incredible album , not to down play their smash debut! The third disc here -" Heartbeat City" , was the turning point for the Cars, thier crossover to more mainstream pop / rock was a major success. Most die-hard Cars fans liked the album but it was quite a change-some yelled "sell-out" , those who werent into the earlier works tended to love this album! It is a classic. The only disappointment is this- there were 3 other albums that were great! The 3rd and 4th albums , were mainly synth with guitar back-up ,and much more new wave then the other albums! Thier last album was not up to par ,but had some great stuff on it! If you want a great collection of thier music- this set is a great one to have, but I highly reccomend to have also is "Shake It Up" ,by far thier must creative music, and most balanced cooperative effort! Grab the discs- enjoy the memories of a band gone bye-and remember how much fun it was to hear thier music on the radio!May Benjamin Orr rest in peace! He will be greatly missed! -Norwegian John"

"This is a box set with the albums The Cars, Candy-O, and Heartbeat City. The Cars and Candy-O are earlier classics in more of a 70s rock style accented with analog keyboard sounds, while Heartbeat City finds the band comfortably settled into the 80s new wave scene. Each of these albums contains many hits. Their self-titled debut gives us such standout tracks as the slow rockers "Good Times Roll" and "You're All I've Got Tonight" as well as the upbeat "My Best Friend's Girl" and the fast, more new wave-infused "Just What I Needed". Candy-O gives us the upbeat, analog-synth driven "Let's Go" and "Dangerous Type".Perhaps the most memorable and recognizable singles, however, come from Heartbeat City, which happens to also be my favorite Cars album. The band scored big hits with the upbeat rockers "Magic" and "You Might Think" as well as the classic ballad "Drive".. This CD also boasts the melancholy new-wave title track and the upbeat "Hello Again", which is one of my favorite Cars tracks.Anyone who likes The Cars but doesn't own these albums should definitely take this opportunity to pick them up! Each one is a genuine classic!"
