Arends showcases her best here from three studio efforts, not to mention two new tracks and five live ones recorded at Nashville's famed Blue Mountain Cafe. Too pop to be folk and too soft to be rock, her music rests somewhere in between, all the while drawing references to both. As a songwriter, Arends employs ideas from early contemporary Christian music with a modern sensibility, evidenced by her single "They'll Know We Are Christians." The smartly tailored arrangements make this so much more than a simple remake. "Father, Thy Will Be Done" is one of the simplest yet clever singles to be released in the CCM market. The call-and-answer verse and steady-beat rhythms leave you with an irresistible melody. The five live tracks are quite pleasing, especially "Go with God," enhanced by Phil Keaggy's masterful lead guitar. It's clear that Arends excels in the live setting, giving color and breath to her material and making her a must-see if she plays a venue near you. Third Day fans may also like this release, considering Mac Powell's appearance on the live "Seize the Day." --Michael Lyttle

CD Reviews

Simply Stunning!
James Blind | 04/21/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This cd is not only a great testament to the staple of Christian radio Carolyn Arends has become it also proves that she is one of the most dynamic live acts that the genre has to offer. From simple stories to songs that will make you reexamine your own spiritual footing, this CD will make you think, smile, reflect and all the good things associated with those things. And the live cuts are to be savored...clearly one of the best songwriters Christian music has to offer."
A great guitar album

"As a DJ who has worked at a couple different radio stations, I can recommend this disk without any reservations. The first song, a familiar hymn to those of us raised in VBS and Sunday School, They'll Know We Are Christians, is a song that I had not been all that fond of until I heard this version. The title track, a great song on its own, is improved by the addition of Mac Powell, lead singer of Third Day, and his unique voice. He blends well with Carolyn Arends and adds great feeling to the verse he sings. Non-christians will be able to appreciate this song as well, as it is not overtly a "Jesus song". The entire album is a good one for those who have avoided Christian music based on misconceptions of what Christian music sounds like. Teenagers who listened to the stations I worked at would request some of these songs, and parents won't mind hearing them."
Such a Treat!!!!

"I have listened to all of Carolyn's music since each recording came out. If I could have mixed my own CD, I would have chosen this recording EXACTLY! I love her gentle and talented voice on Reaching, and Go With God. The LIVE recordings are a great blend of everthing coming together at once. It's neat to hear the audience participation and other artists singing with her. Finally, the two new songs are outstanding! They'll Know We are Christians has such a cool guitar riff and blends some well known scripture into such a contemporary setting. I would love to see her come out with some music books. Overall, this recording is wonderful and such a treat for anyone who listen."
