Inspired, Not An Imitation

"Utterly brilliant from start to finish: a wonderful reminder of two unique and irrepressible talents who've left the stage forever.Recorded live at New York's Blue Note on New Year's Eve 1983, the set finds Ms. McRae in fine and ebullient form. She is ably backed by Marshall Otwell on piano, John Leftwich on bass, Donald Bailey on drums and special guest Zoot Sims on tenor sax.Tackling songs so indelibly linked to one of the greatest vocal legends in history would inspire paralysis in most singers, but Ms. McRae makes it an occasion for joy. She leaps into each song and makes it her own.I bought the CD when it was released on RCA/Novus -- why they let Vol. 1 and 2 of this go out of print is baffling to me. The price on the import is admittedly stiff, but if you're a fan of either artist, swallow hard and pay what you must.
