Synopsis

Guitarist and singer Carl Weathersby has garnered accolades from the blues world ever since his 1996 debut, and Restless Feeling deserves praise no less than his previous two albums. With a crunchy, punchy Chicago style layered with soul, Restless Feeling is aptly titled, full of mood and restless energy. Things kick off with the up-tempo "Matchbox Holds My Clothes," and swerve from funkified rock ("A Real Mutha Fuh Ya") to slow sensuality (title track) to a not-quite-smooth soul ("Everything I Do") to a nice, easy slow blues ("Glory Be"). The closing song, "She's Gone," is exactly what you'd expect to hear at the end of a set at your favorite blues bar, and the album is peppered with clean, energetic guitar-picking throughout, backed by a solid rhythm section (including some of the tastiest bass ever to be pressed on CD). --Genevieve Williams

CD Reviews

Carl Weathersby has found his own unique voice.

(4 out of 5 stars)

""Restless Feeling" Carl Weathersby, Evidence Records...Carl Weathersby has always had a great voice, able to flow like honey around a ballad of loss "Everything I Do" or gust like a Chicago winter wind adding a sharp edge to a blues rocker like "Wheel Of Fortune." As a guitar player Carl is highly respected for his complex harmonic contrasts and powerful solo bursts ("Matchbox Holds My Clothes") begs comparison to the great Albert King one of his strongest influences, and author of the great blues classic Carl has chosen to feature as the first track on this disc. After almost two decades with the great `Sons of the Blues` band fronted by the mercurial contemporary master of the harmonica Billy Branch, Weatheresby decided it was time to try solo wings. For those of us who had heard so much great music from the "SOB's" over the years it was at first a shock, like having your favorite couple breakup; but now there is a sense of rightness to the move. As blues fans we are blessed with two good bands rather than one. Both with futures bound to extend the great blues tradition with insight and pride. "Restless Feeling" the most coherent and vibrant of the three solo CD`s of Weathersby showcases a band practiced and clearly in cinc with each other, (note the fine playing on bass by Dave Smith). Finally, it is important to note that Carl Weathersby is one of the finest blues songwriters of his generation... "Looking Out My Window", "The Blues Follow Me Around", "The Things The Blues Will Make You Do", "Rock Your Town", "Somebody Help Me", and of course "Restless Feeling" the title track on this new CD, could one day be termed blues classics. So listen closely. Down the line in a few short years you can tell your friends you heard Carl Weatheresby as the new kid on the block, long before he owned most of it. Enjoy!! Joseph Reeder 1/6/99"
