Synopsis

Product Description
Carl Craig resurfaces in mid-2000 with Designer Music, Vol. 1. Designer is a collection of hand-picked remixes Craig has done over the years, some of which were originally released only on and using the alias Designer Music, hence, the name of the series. If you are looking for the more popular Tori Amos and Deee-Lite remixes of past, you won't find them on this volume. Rather, Designer One is a collection of Carl's more intelligentsia efforts. Starting off the album with remixes of a spacy UFO and a Latin rhythmic Johnny Blas, Designer seems to be more of a funky instrumental than something from a techno label. By track four, Designer Music breaks out of its shell, when Craig returns to early techno with an incredible remix of Telex' Moscow Disco. Other mentionables include a unique spin on Inner City's Good Life (Buena Vida, as called on the album) and Alexander Robotnik's Problemz. It should be noted that most artists would be torn apart for remixing such classics, but Craig does it proper with class and most importantly elements of funk and soul. For those fans itching for more of the Paperclip People sound, elements show up on the last two remixes, especially the remix of Ron Trent. With each name that Craig works under, whether it is Innerzone Orchestra, Psyche, or Paperclip People, he displays a different side of his talent and artistic taste. With Designer Music, Vol. 1, Craig shows off his ability to break down the essential, recognizable elements of a song and put the pieces back together into a sound that is undeniably his own. ~ Diana Potts, All Music Guide

CD Reviews

Innovate and exciting, but bag the import instead.

"I thought I had bought the domestic release of this, but my tracklisting is different than the one listed here. The import (UK release) tracklisting is as follows: 01. Planet Plan (Carl Craig Mix) - UFO 02. Picadillo (Carl Craig 12" Mix) - Carl Craig Vs Johnny Blas 03. Out Of The Storm 9C's Planet Special Mix) - Incognito 04. Moskow Diskow (Carl Craig Remix) - Telex 05. Moment Of Truth (Carl Craigs Urban Afair Mix) - BT 06. Buena Vida (Carl Craig Mix) - Inner City 07. Kairo (Carl Craig Mix #2) - Spacetime Continuum 08. Problemz De Amour - Alexander Robotnik 09. Altered States (Carl Craigs East Side Remix) - Ron Trent I think it's a smoother track order. Well, here was my first experience with Detroit-style techno. Having listened to trance, jungle and more dancey stuff (a la Oakenfold, etc.) I thought I'd do a little exploring. I read a review recommending this in "Rolling Stone" so I thought I'd check it out. I'm certainly glad I did. The tracks are long, but surprises lurk around every corner. For me, the highlight of the album was when at about six minutes Picadillo turns into a bumpin' salsa jam. Unfortunately, we're only treated to this for a minute or too before the track fades out. Too bad! Some of these are so stimulating, you wish they went on forever. Time flies by. Strings, high hat, bleeps and clicks are all ingredients on hand in Carl's kitchen. While I don't know his solo work (hopefully, I soon will), I really appreciated this mixes and I hope that his own output lives up to this. Strap on your headphones and get ready for a journey."
Nice Remix Collection from Carl Craig

"Most of the tracks are quite entertaining, meditative dancefloor space smackers. A recommended release from the man."
