CD Reviews

Listen loud and/or use headphones

"Growing up on the West Coast in Cal, the music of Cal Tjader is often sampled in tv commercials, has stylistically influenced surf music/west-coast pop bands, and has infiltrated the background of many movies and tv shows. For this reason I urge the listener not to experience the music (or any form of complex instrumental music for that matter) in the way that it has been represented by popular culture, namely as subtle background music. Play it loud and/or use headphones, and dig on the complex rhythms and harmonics that Tjader and Co. are famous for. Call it "latin jazz" music if you will, to me it goes beyond category. I consider Tjader a musical genius, and this represents one of the best recordings to introduce yourself to his genius. Thank you Eddie for your good taste in Tjader's music!"

"Hooyeah! Cal doing it with a style all his own. Ultimate respect paid from the man Eddie Palmieri by selecting his favourite Cal Tjader tracks. Check this if you want to get hip to this west coast cat, ya dig? Essential globetrotting musical companion."
Another great selection in the "Ultimate" series

"I've always been fond of vibes, usually of the Milt Jackson or Terry Gibbs variety. But the enjoyment of vibes isn't complete without the light jazz and latin styles of Cal Tjader. Usually, I avoid compilations and look for the original albums, but this compilation is a particularly good one. It even includes some tracks that I haven't found elsewhere on CD. For example, I've been trying to replace my LP of Tjader's Warm Wave album, but haven't found a CD version yet. But this CD contains two tracks from Warm Wave: "Sunset Boulevard" and "The Way You Look Tonight." Good choices. In fact, all of the 16 tracks are good choices, so if you like vibes, latin jazz, or easy listening jazz, pick this up. You'll also find plenty of information included in the track listing and liner notes."
