CD Reviews

An outstanding collection!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Organ music has a funny reputation, especially in America. We usually associate it with horror movies (Tocatta & Fugue in D Minor being the main example) and it comes off as very scary. It strikes us as intimidating and something that either the Phantom of the Opera or Captain Nemo would be content playing. The truth of the matter is much different, in that organ music comes from the Church, not some madman's secret lair. This collection of the complete organ works of Dietrich Buxtehude is simply outstanding, showing us that organ music is something sublime, not scary. Buxtehude's Praeludium in G Major was written for Christmas and Advent, and it simply sparkles. The other pieces are excellent as well, including the Tocatta in F Minor. Indeed, Hanssen makes them all come to life with his touch. Alas, the box set is no longer available, but the individual CD's are still available. Give one a try sometime, and open up your classical horizons a bit. And remember, organ music is not something to be scared of, but something to be savored."
