Album Description

2008 four CD release, the first installment in a new imprint from Proper Records. To many fellow drummers, Buddy Rich was the consummate genius of the drums. He changed the view and perception of the drums like other great players from Baby Dodds, via Gene Krupa and Kenny Clarke to Elvin Jones. This box set features Buddy in a number of different situations, from small combo to Big Band, proving his great versatility. Watching and listening to Buddy Rich in action was one of the greatest visual spectacles and aural attractions the world of Jazz ever offered. His mental and physical co-ordination and his capacity to confound the onlooker made many question the evidence of their own eyes. Buddy's spectacular drum solos, in particular, defied the imagination and left many of his fellow drummers shaking their heads in amazement and disbelief as they left the venue where Rich had performed.

"If you are a fan of Buddy's, either as a drummer or listener, this set gives you an excellent history of how Rich became the super drummer that he was. The quality of the recordings is excellent, especially due the age of the original recordings. The enclosed booklet tells the story of the recordings and artists which further enhances your knowledge. Even if you have all of the originals as I have, it is still nice to have this varied collection on disc for ease of playing on the go, if necessary. 5 stars!"
