CD Reviews

Buddy Rich, The Best... at his best !!
MARK BERRY | HENDERSON, KY USA | 07/11/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This was recorded in early 1978 and buddy and the band were in fine form.. The album this recording was taken from was called the Class of "78" and it was a superb recording done live in the studio... one 18 min side at a time for the lp. Buddy liked this album and that was not the norm as he was very tough on his and the bands playing.... it can always be better was his way!! But the idea of playing the charts live seemed to work well for the BRB after all he did 270-300 nights on the road playing live and that was what Buddy did best....
Clean sound,Live feel,The Great Buddy Rich Band..it gets no better !!
I own about all of Buddys recordings and this is one of my top 10!! Buy it as many of his recordings go out of print and you will be wishing you got it at Amazon !
Buddy Rich...THE BEST...BAR NONE!"
One star ???

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I own the regular version of this cd so I can't at all comment on the sound quality. It does appear that it could be a cheese-ball label release, but one star? I own several Buddy albums. In fact I own hundreds of jazz cds. This is a short album from what I can recall (a little over 30 minutes). Also, if you're waiting to hear a drum solo, don't hold your breath. Buddy sticks close to the charts on this one. "Birdland" and "Fiesta" are pretty good tunes. Fun charts to listen to Buddy's playful bigband interpretation of what Zawinul and Corea were doing at that time. However, "Cape Verdian Blues" is one of the swingingest tunes I've ever heard. If ever there were a song for the open road this is it. If you're a Buddy fan, crank this song up on the highway. If you can keep the vehicle under 80 m.p.h. than your a better man than me."
