CD Reviews

Full of steam, very enjoyable listen of good time music
J. Ross | Roseburg, OR USA | 12/20/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Total playing time - 42:34 -- Buddy "Rufus" Greene picks rock solid guitar, blows some mighty powerful and tasty harmonica, and sings with a lot of feeling. Raised in Georgia, Buddy Greene has a solid foundation in a variety of musical genres. Greene eventually did a four-year stint as guitarist in Jerry Reed's band, and he has released a number of albums over the years including "Sojourner's Song" which won a Dove Award in 1991.On Greene's latest project, he demonstrates his versatility with a mix of fiddle tunes (Sally Goodin, Cluck Ol' Hen), Gospel (Working on a Building, Crying Holy, Rock in a Weary Land, One Way Avenue), blues (Deep River Blues, Walking Blues), Celtic (The Little Beggar Man), swing (Kinfolk in Carolina), bluegrass (Highway Heading South), and even some Beatles (All My Loving). The tunes are given a distinctive personalized flavor, with arrangements that have a lot of git-up-and-go.Much of the hustle on this album is also provided by a cast of talented musical characters that include Jerry Douglas (dobro), Sam Bush (mandolin), Chuck Leavell (piano), Ron Block (banjo), Kenny Malone (percussion), Byron House (bass), Ashley Cleveland (harmony vocals), and Kenny Meeks (harmony vocals and electric guitar). These hot pickers clearly had fun putting this one together. "RUFUS" is full of steam and a very enjoyable listen of good time, toe-tappin', eclectic music. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)"
