CD Reviews

First rate informal session
Tad Ulrich | Los Angeles, CA USA | 12/13/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Budd Johnson is at the top of his game in this outstanding Prestige/Swingville session released in 1961. The mighty tenor has never been mightier. And with a superlative rhythm section consisting of Tommy Flanagan, piano; George Duvivier, bass; and Charlie (now Charli) Persip on drums, the musicians (also including Budd's brother Keg on Trombone) play with a rare fire and inspiration.Budd's arrangements of both original compositions and standards are varied and thoughtful and give everyone ample opportunity for inspired improvisation. As usual, George Duvivier is simply marvelous on bass, both in accompaniment and solo. His is a style you can recognize anywhere. He was truly one of jazz's best bassists. Aspiring jazz drummers should listen to Charlie Persip's consummate skill and creativity. He was equally adept at both big band and small group sessions.Bottom line, this is a first rate session that deserves a place in any pure jazz fan's library."

"It'a a rare opportunnity to appreciate pure mainstream jazz, played by jazz monsters, with soul (and without commercials concessions). Budd Johnson is really a jazz icon, a reference among jazz musicians."
