Red Hot Swing Session
William Faust | Columbus, Ohio | 08/11/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This studio session, recorded in 1960, features one of the swing era's best tenormen accompanied by four trumpet heavyweights and a world class rhythm section that includes pianist Tommy Flanagan and "Crazy" Joe Benjamin on bass. This is a wailing swing ensemble that showcases the very different yet complementary styles of Edison, Nance, Terry and Adderly on trumpet (and flugelhorn) against Johnson's driving tenor. The trumpet work provides a unique look at how each of these big band alumni bring their backgrounds to a new forum. You can hear hints of Basie in Edison's solos and likewise some Ellingtonia via Nance and Terry. The tunes include mostly blues and standards with eveyone getting lots of room for inventive and sizzling solos. Highly recommended."
This is a CLASSIC Riverside session

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I still have my "Budd Johnson and the Four brass Giants" LP, and I listen to it a whole lot. The "Blues for Lester" is a very swinging tribute. Budd gets off some loving Lester tribute licks and plays wonderfully, but what gives this one its signature sound are those four GIANTS - Nat Adderley, Ray Nance, 'Sweets' Edison and Clark Terry. Highly recommended for some classic swinging 'near-bop'."
