CD Reviews

The "New-Used Car" philosophy of Bruce Cockburn
07/29/1998
(3 out of 5 stars)

"For long time Bruce Cockburn fans and collectors of his work, Mummy Dust contains many songs you have likely come across. The CD, however, also pumps out some old works which were new to me, and should be new to all but the die hardest fans. My favorite of these new-old cuts is "dweller by a dark stream." Melodically complex as well as compelling is the reason. The subject matter deals with Bruce's born again faith, and there ain't nothing wrong in that. It's a beatiful song. Another awesome tune previously unreleased "red brother, red sister." It's the opposite of the previous tune I mentioned, simple melody, but man the lyrics are pure Bruce in poetry. It's sort of Bruce's apology to Native Americans for past deads done by the White Man, you know - rape, pillage, and plunder. One of my favorite rehashed songs on this album, many long time Bruce fans will know is "loner." This song was the last cut on Bruce's Inner City Front album and daz! zles not only in poetry, lyrical ability, but also instrumentally with a blazing electronic violin that cuts right to your soul."
