CD Reviews

A Cult Band's Odds and Ends

"(Note: I use quotation marks to distinguish "Brinsley Schwarz" - the band from Brinsley Schwarz - the lead guitar player.)
If you are not already a BIG "Brinsley Schwarz" fan (one who already owns most if not all of their original studio albums), don't bother with "Hen's Teeth", it is NOT the place to start. But if you are already familiar with the sublime delights to be found sprinkled throughout the "Brinsley Schwarz" catalog, then you may very well enjoy this collection. It compiles A and B sides of 11 singles issued from 1967-1975. The first 5 singles (10 songs) represent the entire recorded legacy of "Kippington Lodge", Nick Lowe and Brinsley Schwarz's pre-"Brinsley Schwarz" band. These songs reveal a fairly mediocre pop band and are mainly of historical interest. The remaining 12 songs comprise 6 non-LP singles by "Brinsley Schwarz", sometimes under assumed names ("The Hitters", "The Knees", "Limelight", "The Brinsleys"). The anonymity allowed the band to play around, recording a variety of covers - reggae, Tommy Roe, several Beatles songs. It's all fun and lightweight. But the original "Brinsley Schwarz" albums are all better."
For obsessives only!

"For the Brinsley Schwarz fans among us (both of us) this is the answer to our prayers. It collects all the UK non-album tracks from their previous life as Kippington Lodge and then as Brinsley Schwarz. Their reissued albums are available from various labels (Demon & BGO) and Hen's Teeth completes the picture."
