Bernstein's best Brahms Symphony recording for DG
Alan Majeska | Bad Axe, MI, USA | 08/30/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Brahms' Symphony 4 is Bernstein's best Brahms' Symphony recording for Deutsche Grammophon (DG). Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) recorded all 4 Brahms Symphonies with the New York Philharmonic for Sony Classical in the early 1960s, and again in 1983 for Deutsche Grammophon. The DG recordings were done in live concerts, and being there live must have been exciting, but on CD, parts of Symphonies 1, 2, and 3 come off as too slow and distended to keep my attention and concentration for long.

Symphony 4, however, is lovely and recalls Bruno Walter's great recording with the Columbia Symphony (Sony, recorded in 1959). The Vienna Philharmonic could play this music in their sleep, and they have recorded it with great conductors such as Furtwangler, Bohm and Kertesz. The combination of the Vienna Philharmonic with Bernstein is interesting, and serves the music well. The "Tragic Overture" is also very well done, and an attractive bonus.

Bernstein fans might consider this, or the New York recordings of Brahms Symphonies 1 and 4 (Sony Classical). My favorite Brahms' Symphony 4 recordings are Walter (Sony), Steinberg (MCA), and Bohm/Vienna (DG)."
