CD Reviews

A Re-Packaging of Earlier Kuerti Recordings, and at Mid-Pric
J Scott Morrison | Middlebury VT, USA | 05/19/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This set of three CDs contains music by Brahms recorded and released previously on the Analekta label. The main selections are the two Brahms Piano Concerti. I'm very fond of Kuerti's playing, which tends to be poetic rather than dramatic -- for me that is a plus, especially in the first concerto which can sound rough or overfreighted with 'meaning' in other hands. Included are also a number of latish solo pieces. Kuerti is accompanied by Montréal's second orchestra, the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal, and while they are not as silken as the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, they are acceptable at worst and exceptional at best. (That beautiful extended cello solo in the third movement of the Second Concerto is played gorgeously.)

I would refer you to Dan Fee's review that appears at the earlier release's product page: Brahms: Piano Concertos/Intermezzi for further information about the playing of the two concerti and the Op. 117 Intermezzi.
