A wonderful collection of Brahms choral works
Critic at large | East Coast USA | 09/20/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Marcus Creed directs the wonderful RIAS-Kammerchor in this recording that belongs in the collection of anyone instested in Brahms and the German vocal tradition.

In addition to the wonderful sounds and execution of the Kammerchor, a real plus is that these are Germans singing. While overall musicianship is more important, there is an advantage in having native singers perform vocal works.

Ennunciation and phrasing are important, as Brahms' secular choral music harks back to the German choral tradition of composers such as Bach and Schutz, as do Brahms' religously oriented motets. All are crafted with an intelligence that demands careful listening. Lesser performers might well turn the text, complex musical lines and harmonies into a mushy sound, diminishing the performances, but not the Kammerchor.

If you are a choral fan and enjoy German lieder, buy this excellent recording. You will not regret it.
