"The themes of the story play out in its music, from the night sea journey in the beginning through the message of hope through change at the end. For women, black people, immigrants, technology, the law, politics -- too many aspects of life to take in, change was the standard at the beginning of this century. Yet the universal constants remain: love, hope and kindness, as well as cruelty, ignorance and indifference. The music is true to the spirit of the characters singing it, and what characters! Heartily recommended -- I found my theme song here, and you may, too."

"This is the most amazing score of any musical, except maybe for some Sondheim masterpieces. The music is so emotional, so strong, so pure... it's a work of art. Ahrens and Flaherty's songs are amazing, and the voices and talents of the cast are breathtaking. I would reccommend this CD to anyone, musical theater buffs and pop-music people alike. It has soul, heart, rhythm, and style."
