An Adolescent Treat!
A. Lawson | Washington, DC | 02/09/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Coming out of Motown's New Wave Of Talent camp, the Boys were destined to be the latter day Jackson 5. While they never lived up to the expectations, the closest they came to matching the jacksons was on their impressive debut. They reeled off two hit singles ("Dial My Heart", "Lucky Charm"), and also produced an obscure hit in "A Little Romance". All three singles favored the laface sound, light new jack pop that appealed to the urban as well as popular audiences. Other highlights include the funky "Personality", energetic "Let's Dance", and aggressive "Be My Girl". For whatever reason, the Boys' popularity started to falter after the laface team parted with Motown. That makes this release all the more momentous. In other words, while Messages From The Boys is not an startling debut, it is worth listening to for the preteen/adolescent of the '80s and essential for any fan of new jack."
One of the best

"I was only 8 or 9 when The Boys came onto the scene. Me being a typical girl thought they were the cutest things. I'm sure I'm not the only one who just knew Hakeem and Khiry were the finest ones out of the group. I played this cassette (at the time I didn't know anything about CD's), over and over and over again until I let someone borrow it and I never got it back until 9 years ago I found the cassette in a record store and I bought it along with the other two albums they had out. This album is a classic. You can't get any better than "Dial my heart", Be My girl", and "Sunshine"."
Fine, dynamite first effort from the Boys

"I still remember the Boys' first album. They were a very young group with the members being 11, 12 or so, but they had a dynamite album in 1988. Strong numbers such as the ultra funky Dial My Heart dominate this album. For LA and Babyface to produce a fun, melodic first effort for the Boys is an understatement, and it is still one of their best hit records. The rest of the album follows the similar boy meets girl themes and young love, yet the group delivers on every song. I still love Sunshine. Although their later albums sold well, they could not match with the talent that is displayed on this album.

Brilliant teen pop long before,NKOTB, Backstreet Boys and NSYNC took over."
