CD Reviews

Best album of 1984

"The self titled Box of Frogs album was the best album of 1984. Everyone was listening to MJ's thriller (ack-pthht), I was listening to this. I didn't make the same connection to Strangeland, but I still enjoy the first album.

Standout songs include "Just a Boy Again" and "Harder". Jeff Beck sits in with some of his old friends from the Yardbirds - good stuff."

"I was all of 15 years old, parachute pants and a "Frankie Say Relax" tee, sitting on a cliff with my buddy Bobby and my trusty boombox when all of a sudden the sound of crickets emenated from said boombox followed by the thumping bass and bombastic drums of "Back Where I Started"....I was immediately hooked. I'll be honest, there may be more songs on the cassette but who really cares about them? The video on MTV (yes, they actually used to PLAY videos!!)I think had frogs, a box, a swamp and maybe some fog, but who can remember when there were much better videos by Prince, Quiet Riot and Missing Persons???!!!

But alas, my obsession with them lasted all of 2 weeks, quickly replaced by "Let's Go All the Way" by Sly Fox. We spent the summer on that cliff, talking about girls, getting yelled at by neighbors to turn down the music, then walking down to the Center to get 2 slices of pizza and a soft drink for $2.99+tax, good times, good times....

Fast forward to the nineties and me, Bobby, JJ and Jim....and get this, a kid named Frog(!) are on a cruise pulling more chicks than Frank Perdue! Bobby literally shatters his spleen doing some foolish dance move(SMOOTHY!), Jim is on his 3rd pair of stained shorts, JJ is rocking this J Crew blue and white polka dot bathing suit and I'm getting hit on by Malachai!! I have pictures of ALL of this btw, it is the stuff of legends.
