Synopsis

Album Description
John Ireland (1879-1962) lived all his life in England, and is considered a thoroughly British composer. Beneath Ireland's reserved and rather skeptical manner there lay strong, warm feelings, as much of his music shows. The early Frank Bridge works on this CD are more immediately ingratiating than those he wrote from 1924 onwards, though they do not lack intensity of feeling. Once again Sir Adrian Boult, one of the greatest British conductors of the twentieth century, leads historic and authoritative performances of great English composers.

More British gems from Lyrita
jsa | San Diego, CA United States | 03/23/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Here's another seventy glorious minutes of 20th century British music from the vaults of Lyrita, authoritatively conducted by Sir Adrian Boult. The program opens with John Ireland's very engaging Concertino Pastorale, a three movement suite for string orchestra written in 1939. This & Frank Bridge's four movement Suite for String Orchestra, a very appealing work from his early period, are the extended works on the disc, and are bracketed with gem-like shorter pieces by both composers.

I was fortunate to have purchased this music on vinyl over thirty years ago from the Musical Heritage Society & HNH records, which licensed material from Lyrita for release in the United States. I loved these recordings then & love them even more now, especially as they are now collected on one well-programmed cd.

These are definitive performances in remastered stereo sound that is full & rich. Anyone who is exploring 20th century English music would be hard pressed to find a better introduction, especially when you can download it for only $8.99.

Very highly recommended!
