CD Reviews

A good disc

(3 out of 5 stars)

"Freudenfeuer, initially released in 1996 and re-released in 2001, is a good piece of music from the German band Bonfire. This is a German language import album. There are ten tracks, and they are in a straight-ahead hard rock musical direction. The songwriting is pleasing, the musicianship is tight, and the sound quality is gratifying. I find all of the songs to be enjoyable. Four of them are power ballads--"Komm Her," "Verdammt Was Will Ich," "Für Dich," and "Rock 'N' Roll Cowboy." Keyboards are sparingly used throughout the disc. The guitar work is skillful; acoustic guitar playing is also utilized. The meat-and-potatoes vocals of Claus Lessmann are worthy. Examples of songs that I like are the enjoyable opening tune "Bis Wir Uns Wiedersehen," the memorable, nice-sounding "Rock 'N' Roll Cowboy," and "Freundschaft." The driving "Wach Auf" features shiny backing vocals, and the energetic "Geld Macht Sexy" sports a taut guitar solo. The CD booklet contains the song lyrics (no English translations) and two black-and-white photos of Lessmann and guitarist Hans Ziller. The CD is almost 46 minutes. It's cool being able to hear the group sing in German. Freudenfeuer is a solid album from Bonfire."
