Synopsis

There's a powerful new force in the bluegrass world, and its name is Blue Highway. On Wind to the West, Blue Highway again resists the temptation to show off their fast and flashy picking and instead sells each song with a strong vocal framed by sturdy rhythms and mood-heightening embellishments. If this emphasis on emotional songwriting and uncluttered arrangements brings to mind Alison Krauss, it's no coincidence. Blue Highway's founder and guitarist Tim Stafford is an alumnus of Krauss's Union Station band; dobroist Rob Ickes has recorded with her in the studio; and fiddler/mandolinist Shawn Lane has played with Ricky Skaggs, Krauss's most obvious model. Lane's high, handsome tenor yields the best vocal moments as on his aching version of the old Ralph Stanley hymn, "Two Coats." Bluegrass doesn't get more lonesome than this. --Geoffrey Himes

Another Classic From The Band
TheHighlander | Richfield, PA United States | 05/15/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD showed that Blue Highway's initial success was not a fluke. Carrying on the tradition that they started with their debut CD (It's A Long Long Road) they have once again created music with great harmonies, great instrumentation and great messages. With a mix of originals, covers and traditional songs this CD soars. My personal favorites include Shawn Lane's (the mandolin/fiddle player & vocalist) "Between The Rows". A song remembering his life as a boy on the family farm. Tim Stafford's (guitar & vocals) "Clear Cut" about the practice of ruining the mountain in this way of harvesting lumber. Another highlight is their cover of Merle Haggard's "Huntsville". The list goes on and one with many exceptional cuts on this 13 track project. One of the best contemporary bluegrass bands around that pays homage to the tradition. With luck Blue Highway will be around for a long long time!"
Maybe the best of the 5 (to date) Blue Highway projects

"There are no duds from Blue Highway - only varying degrees of "good" - but this CD is a personal favorite. The instrumental work is tasteful and the vocals are hauntingly beautiful. "Clear Cut", about the exploitation by a company of a family's ancestral land, cuts to the soul, and the other tracks are equally good. Bravo, Blue Highway! If you have ANY interest in contemporary Bluegrass I would consider Blue Highway an essential part of a collection."

"I'm a huge fan of Blue Highway and all their CDs, but this is probably my favorite. The guys are at their best on these 13 tracks, both vocally and instrumentally. To this day anytime I hear "Horseshoe Bend" I think of that very place on Boone Lake in east Tennessee."
