Blaze Absolutely Rules!
MetalMarc | Grand Rapids, MI USA | 02/09/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"What can I say, this guy just gets it! Another fine slab of in your face, unpretentious modern metal! When I say modern I don't mean the trendy kind either. I just mean it sounds fresh and relevant and not dated at all. This is just powerful in your face metal the way it was meant to be played, just like what Blaze has been delivering since he parted from Iron Maiden and started putting out solo albums.

However this album may very well be his best yet! Picking up in the style of the last album (The Man Who Would not Die) Promise and Terror builds upon it's predicessor with an even more focused and tighter sound, a better production, and even better songs! Opening song 'Watching the Night Sky' just flat out rocks! Highly energenic and makes you want to crank up your stereo full blast! 'Madness and Sorrow' features long ripping trade off guitar solos, while '1633' is a bit more epic and Maidenish in nature. 'God of Speed' might just be the best song of the album, just a great creative song with a fantastic building chorus! The following 3 songs are all fantastic and album highlights as well!

The guitar playing on this album is Killer! As well as the drums and bass with a nice audible tone! And Blaze's vocals are in top form as well!

The last 4 songs are slower and I believe deal with the well documented loss of Blaze's wife. 3 of them I would consider ballads, and while not album highlights, they all are very well done with very personal and heartfealt lyrics obviously. 'The Trace of Things That have no Words' is more of a traditional mid-tempo metal track.

After the tragic loss of his wife, I was not expecting Blaze to release another album so soon, much less one even better than his awesome previous album (The Man Who Would Not Die). But this truely is an even better and more inspired album! A great tribute to the human spirit really considering the magnitute of what Blaze had to overcome. I already liked and respected Blaze a lot but how can you not respect this guy even more after what he has gone through and been able to achive?

'Promise and Terror' is a 2010 metal highlight!

A quick summary of each track.

"Awesome, powerful album. Blaze Bayley never fails to disappoint. My brief thoughts on each track:

*Watching the Night Sky*

Great song. It starts off right away, fast, and maintains a steady flow of awesome throughout. What a nice way to kick off the album.

*Madness and Sorrow*

This one took a few listens to really click with me.. but once it did, I was hooked! Another fast, great song.

*1633*

A solid track, this one. It starts off good, and slowly achieves greatness near the end. I like it.

*God of Speed*

Oh boy, God of Speed... I loved this one. Everything about it is just awesome. Blaze released a "taster clip" on his Myspace page, and I was immediately hooked.

*City of Bones*

This song was nice. Not one of my favorites from the album, but I enjoyed it none-the-less.

EDIT: City of Bones has really grown on me!

*Faceless*

Another track Blaze teased us with prior to the release of the album. I love this song. It's a fast song, and very catchy. It really gets you pumped up for the rest of the album.

*Time to Dare*

Just coming off of Faceless, I wasn't sure what to expect with this one. Right when Time to Dare started playing, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Right up there with God of Speed. I loved it right from the start. The album gets VERY interesting from here on out (in an epic way!)

*Surrounded by Sadness*

This, and the rest of the album's 3 tracks are connected. This one is very good, it's simple, yet deep. Blaze sounds incredible, and passionate with these last 4 songs.

*The Trace of Things That Have No Words*

Continuing seamlessly from Surrounded by Sadness, this one is just epic... Blaze is very powerful and awesome here.

*Letting Go of the World*

Again, continuing from the previous track, Blaze is dark in this one. The title says it all. I really enjoyed.

*Comfortable in Darkness*

The final track. It leaves you with a great impression of the album, ending it's trio of connected predecessors.

Final thoughts: I am so very pleased with this album, as it exceeded my expectations. Ever since Blaze released Watching the Night Sky, and tasters of God of Speed and Faceless, I had high hopes, and couldn't wait to hear more. I enjoyed Promise and Terror every bit as much as The Man Who Would Not Die, maybe more-so. The cover art is fantastic, it represents the songs very well, and I recommend you buy this immediately. 5/5

"I'm not good writing reviews. But this album is fantastic. I think he's just improving on everysingle aspect of his life. As an artis, as singer and as well as human because all he went trough.

Every single song is just great and the last 4 songs starting Surronded by Sadness and ending by Comfortable in Darkness are just epic.

I really start to following him as soon he was released from Maiden and I really do think happening this to him was the best.

Hope more people can order the CD here in amazon. So I can get my real CD copy. But for 9.00 USD the mp3 format is just great.

BUY IT.
