CD Reviews

A good purchase for new Blank & Jones fans...
Andrew C. Lin | New Jersey | 09/05/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This 2 disc set encompasses all of the major hits of the German trance duo known as Blank & Jones. For existing fans who've bought other Blank & Jones albums, I suggest you not buy this compilation, unless you're wanting the set for the DVD complete with every music video to date.

For new Blank & Jones fans, this compilation should be a nice taste of the work of Blank & Jones through the years. Although some may be put off by the fact that the majority of the tracks are radio edits or short cuts, it reinforces the "Singles" nature of the compilation.

In short, if you're already a fan of Blank & Jones, there's nothing too new about this; otherwise, this would be a good starter for new Blank & Jones, or casual trance fans in general."
What A Couple Cheeseballs!!!

"I was a big fan of Piet & Jaspa's ealier stuff such as anthems like "Cream" & "After Love". I hadn't picked up many releases since their "DJ Culture" album so I figured a singles collection would be a great buy. WRONG!!! What happened guys? While Blank & Jones released some classic trance back in the day, their newer releases... Not so much. Not that I'm complaining about the compilation itself. They've done a descent job throwing this whole thing together. From what I can tell you get just about every significant B&J release since the beginning of their career. One gripe I have is there are 22 tracks on the CD; they should've made this a 2 CD + 1 DVD & just charged a little more, that would've been a much more satifying buy. As it stands you get 22 edits meaning 3-4 minute blurbs of the actual full length version, I don't understand the logic in doing this, when I buy a song, I want the whole song, not just 3 minutes of it; seriously, who wants that? The other cool thing about the collection though is the DVD, you get like 18 of their music videos on the 2nd DVD disc. They coulda gone the Fatboy route(at least for the Americans) & milked us an extra $20 bucks for the videos but they were gracious enough to include these, for that I give them 2 stars. It would be great for them to now got back and release another greatest hits collection 3 discs long, 2 discs with full 12' mix's & a third disc that included remix's by both them & other artists, even after buying this album "The Singles", I'd still go out and buy that one. Now that would make a nice album & defiantely worth shelling out $20.

This maybe a great buy for garbage, commercial, poppy, trance listeners, for me though & probably for most other respectable Trance fans out there, I coulda lived without it. For anyone looking for a great "Blank & Jones" album pick up their first one "DJ Culture"(the European Edition), from start to finish every single track on that entire album(aside from "Flying To The Moon", shoulda seen it coming)is phenomenal. "Blank & Jones" should pursue marketing strategies with Cheetos or Doritos, I can see them having a future in selling cheese, as for this album though... Buyer beware."
A piece of Trance history...

"It doesn't matter if you know Blank & Jones or not.

I myself was under the impression of not knowing anything of Blank & Jones only to realize, after listening to this compilation , that a good deal of music I've heard in the past was in fact by Blank & Jones !

Not only does this album provide a good come back on Blank & Jones's best , but it clearly shows how Trance became more sophisticated & warm over the years, making this album a piece of Trance history.

The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that an interview with the band & artists collaborators would have make a great addition to an already excellent cd/dvd content. I really recommend reading the liner notes , they are pretty much interesting as the guys give their personnal views on each of the tracks.

One last thing, you may observe that all the tracks are "radio edits" or "short cuts" of their original counterpart. Real "clubbers" may found this a desapointment. But as far as I'm concern, cutting the "club friendly" intro's & outro's of each track was an excellent idea to provide even more tracks. Finally , this combo cd/dvd is a great value for money.
