(5 out of 5 stars)

"For nearly 20 years, Biota has produced sounds untouched by genre or trend. Their music is a dense and lovely musique-concrete mass, with unsteady tripping rhythms, strange medieval fanfares, and undersea melodies. On _Object Holder_, they pull out obsolete instruments like the hurdy-gurdy, clavioline, Hawaiian tremoloa (a plucked string oddity) and marxophone (an autoharp-like device with 15 spring-loaded hammers), making them sound like a Gamelan orchestra broadcasting from the deck of a capsizing ship. Biota is joined on this release by Chris Cutler, Susanne Lewis, and C.W. Vrtacek."
