Synopsis

Album Description
"Ithamara Koorax has one of the loveliest voices in creation." -- Frank-John Hadley, DownBeat "Koorax has set a new bar for jazz vocalists who come after her. As she does, they will need to embody many traditions and musical histories, root them in the tradition, and be able to comfortably combine as well improvise seamlessly with and between them. Thus far, Brazilian Butterfly is the jewel in Koorax's crown and a watermark in the 21st century, not only for Brazilian jazz, but for jazz and world music as a whole." -- All Music Guide "I quickly became a Koorax Konvert ... She is multi-faceted and multi-lingual, comfortable in all situations and expressive in a variety of languages ... Her powerful singing speaks for itself with celestial eloquence." -- Ira Gitler * Features a duet with renowned Brazilian guitarist Juarez Moreira.
* João Gilberto, widely acknowledged as the creator of the bossa nova, has sold millions of albums--including the seminal Getz/Gilberto, which yielded the hit songs "Girl from Ipanema" and "Corcovado." The album spent 96 weeks in the charts and won four Grammy Awards including Album of the Year (a first for the jazz genre)!
* Established Rio de Janeiro-based vocalist Ithamara Koorax has recorded 11 solo albums and 15 soundtracks, and has collaborated with such top artists as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfa, Ron Carter, Larry Coryell, and Sadao Watanabe.
* Koorax, who was first introduced to American listeners on Serenade in Blue (Milestone, 2002), placed fourth that year in the Female Singer category of the DownBeat Reader's Poll--finishing just behind Cassandra Wilson, Diana Krall, and Dianne Reeves. She is lauded as "one of the best jazz singers of all time" in Scott Yanow's new book The Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide.
* Liner notes by renowned jazz historian Ira Gitler detail the recording history of each song, and explore Gilberto's historical significance as a great innovator of jazz and world music.

CD Reviews

Just Beautiful!

"This is a truly refreshing Brazilian jazzy style.

João Gilberto got Ithamara with a fabulous tone and tuning and Juarez Moreira with a sharp techniques over a acoustic guitar - finger style as Bossa Nova deserve and got a stunning swing approach.

The hit track" Bim Bom" is just impressive but I have to say that Hô-Bá-Lá-Lá (English Version) got my attention even further. May be the English language got more expression than Portuguese or may be the inspiration and momentum.

Great to hear, great to feel!

"Year in and year out, the "Down Beat" critics rate Ithamara Koorax one of the finest jazz singers in their polls. Yet, her recordings are difficult to find (at a reasonable price, that is).

However, the Jazz Therapy project got ahold of her, and thus, American ears can now hear her at a reasonable price.

This c.d. is worth any price. It is sublime, utterly sublime.

This is a collection of Joao Gilberto tunes, most unfamiliar to my untrained ears (except for "Voce Esteve Com Meu Bem?", which I adored on Caetano Veloso's "Fina Estampa.") (Recall that "Getz/Gilberto" was by and large Jobim tunes) Without exception, they are heavenly. It is almost pointless to single one song out, because they are all performed so brilliantly. I particularly loved "Minha Saudade," "Glass Beads," "Joao Marcelo" and "Acapulco." But "Ho-Ba-La-La" is utterly charming - both Portuguese and English versions - as is "Bim Bom." One listen through, and your alpha waves will be in order.

I understand why Ms. Koorax is rated so highly. She has one of the most expressive voices in all of popular music. And here, she and the wonderful Juarez Moriera are perfectly in balance throughout.

I don't care what nationality you are, what ethnicity you are, or what your tastes in music are. If you have music in your soul, buy this c.d. (or mp3's). Now. That's an order. RC"
